Abstract

Yerba mate and matcha are herbal infusions with rich cultural traditions and confirmed health-promoting properties that are currently becoming trends in a healthy lifestyle. Yerba mate, valued for centuries by the Guarani Indians as a sacred herb and source of energy, is characterized by a complex chemical composition, including purine alkaloids, polyphenols, and saponins, which exhibit antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and chemopreventive effects. Its cultural significance, expressed through the cebar rituals and the social dimension of drinking, highlights yerba mate as a symbol of unity and hospitality. Matcha, powdered green tea, plays a key role in the Japanese tea ceremony Sado and is also valued for its high content of catechins, especially EGCG, which support cognitive functions, exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, and positively influence lipid and glucose metabolism. In vitro studies also indicate matcha’s potential in cancer prevention through modulation of apoptosis and angiogenesis. This article integrates traditional, culinary, and scientific aspects, presenting yerba mate and matcha as valuable components of the modern functional diet.
